In my practice of sketching portrait, I have draw Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes. It was also part of the Sketch A Day prompt Study, as the first book from Arthur Conan Doyle showing Sherlock Holmes was A study in scarlet.

For this sketch, I use my usual graphite pencil from Faber Castell, Jumbo 9000, on a pre-perforated sketchbook. I decided to sketch Sherlock Holmes (in this case Benedict Cumberbatch) in the same style I did other portraits that I still have to put in this blog, by shading only the skin, keeping the accessories (the hate and clothes) as a rudimentary sketch. I blended the graphite with a blending stump to do the shading and used the mono eraser for the highlights on the face. Finally I used a blue and a metallic Posca marker pen to do the eyes. I layered both colors on top of each other to give a blue-grey eye colour. I did sketched the hat way too tall, but as it is not an important part of this sketch, I didn’t erased it to resketch it again.

For the list of portrait I sketched we have in addition to this one: Benjamin Zephaniah, Sanjeev Bhaskar as DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan, Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher, Bill Skarsgård’s as The Crow, James May, Emily Campbell, and Henry Cavill. More that are already drawn are coming!
