To start my painting journey, I have followed a free painting workshop using watercolour at the Wantage Library in May 2025. I learned to dabble with paints, and brushes, and I did both landscapes. Quote of the workshop was “more water! more water!”. The first painting (photo in the left) was part of the warm up. I tried to paint a volcano. I did not have references so I painted it from memory. The second one (photo in the right) was the part of painting from a reference they provided. I struggled to do the trees or add texture in general. Interestingly, one of the person mentioned to me that I had a “Edvard Munch” style when seeing the second landscape. I take that as a compliment, even though I have no clue how I achieved the “Munch” effect, as I am still trying to understand watercolour.

#ads: All Amazon affiliation links in this article are items I really bought and used.
Since this workshop, I received a simple set of Daler-Rowney watercolour tubes, which I squeezed some paint into empty watercolour pans by Meeden so I have the palette tin in my desk ready to use anytime. Thanks to this palette tin, I have done more painting, because I don’t have to find my tubes, get things ready, etc. I also bought a set of brush from Lidl, because while I was shopping there, they had cheap brushes so I bought them. What a mistake. I don’t mind Lidl branded stuff, some are good, some are bad, it is just mater of finding the good cheap items. I can tell you, their brushes are awful. They lose hairs so easily, and the quality is definitely bad. I only use them once, to mix paint, but not for painting. Since then, I bought this set 3 brushes from The Army Painter, I have not used them yet, as I will use them for fine details.
