This month in The Addictive Sketcher Movement, it is urban sketching. Something I am struggling with. Not necessary because of finding vanishing point and perspective, eventhough I am learning to do that, but because I haven’t found a nice medium to use for urban sketching. I tried graphite pencils, but somehow, I don’t find it nice how I use them when I tried to do urban sketching. Also I get lost in the details easily, something that I need work on.
What I recently did, is to use both graphite pencils and coloured pencils, but again the graphite pencils were too harsh. I eventually followed the Domestika course Sketchbook Illustration with Colored Pencils by Zoë Barke to learn more about colored pencils.
It is a very good course to learn to use coloured pencils in general and I learned tips around layering colors and not using graphite pencil but rather a grey color pencil. It is really interesting because I had the same feeling than the teacher about coloured pencil, I didn’t like them at the beginning, but now, I start to love them because I am starting to use them in a way I like it. I am obviously not good at it, but this is part of the learning process and I finally enjoy learning to use coloured pencils.

I received long time ago a pack of 12 Daler-Rowney colour pencils for Christmas, I am enjoying them, and I have planned to buy more colour pencils in a near futur to have more colour choice. I recently bought some graphite pencils from Castle Arts, so I am tempted to take their color pencil sets too.
For the final project of the Domestika course, I did an urban sketching based on a photo found on internet and that correspond to the prompt Outfit, as I am also on the excellent Sketch A Day app. I used several colour pencils and draw on my A5 sketchbook, as I didn’t need a A4 size.
