I am on the app Sketch A Day, and today’s prompt is James. I have several choice, Jesse James, James Bond, James Brown, James Blunt, James May, so many James! As I don’t have the time or particularly want to sketch the portrait of all the famous James, I went for James May. It is probably the last James I saw recently on TV, as I watched the last non-Gran Tour released last month or so on Amazon Prime.
I wanted to sketch from a recent photo of James May and he recently published on Twitter a picture of him in front of the ROY (The Royal Oak), he just opened. I found the photo challenging and fun to sketch so I did it.

Couple of difference with my other sketches is that I did use much of Faber-Castell Jumbo 9000, yet I still love them, I just didn’t want to go to dark. So like for the tuna sketch, I have used a Derwent Graphic 7H pencil for the sketching on my A4 200gr sketchbook, the middle tones, and some drawing lines. I used the 2B from Faber-Caster Jumbo 9000 for the dark tones. Basic blending stumps for the graphite blending, and the Tombow mono eraser for couple of highlights.
I surprised myself for not using white Posca pen markers, especially that James May have white hairs and it would have be good to use the white Posca, same for his eyes colour! What is going on with me? I might decide to add color touches tomorrow. As you know, I hate to do the hairs, because I don’t know how to do them properly. I might retouch the hair a bit tomorrow, by slightly blending the hairs and going through with a sharp pencil again, as it feel a bit like I didn’t draw much of his hairs with a missing top head.
